PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium free games for January 2023 announced

PlayStation Plus’ free games for the Extra and Premium tiers have been announced for January 2023.

The middle and top tiers will be adding new games for subscribers to play from Tuesday, January 17.

Extra gives users a library of hundreds of games to download to PS4 and PS5, rotating in and out like a video streamer. Premium expands the library even further with remasters and retro titles, including ‘new’ emulated versions of PS1 and PSP games.

Games listed as PS5/PS4 have native versions for both systems, but games listed only as PS4 are fully playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility, and are sometimes enhanced with better performance, graphics, and load times.

Leading the Extra pack is Devil May Cry 5 (PS4) swear Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition (PS5).

The latest in the series of stylish demon-slaying action games gives you three characters with different play styles to swap between in over 20 blood-soaked levels. Special Edition goes even further with an extra character, faster gameplay, and a mode in which the amount of enemies on screen reaches Dynasty Warriors levels.

Next up is Dragon Ball FighterZ (PS4), a highly-acclaimed 3v3 fighting game based on the iconic anime and manga. Highly stylized graphics mix with lightning-fast combat, and while there isn’t much in the way of plot, there is a fun new villain and plenty of interactions fans will love.

A PS5 version of Dragon Ball FighterZ has been announced, but we don’t know when it’s coming out or if it’ll be a freebie for people who have the game through Plus.

Life Is Strange (PS4) and its prequel Life Is Strange: Before the Storm (PS4) center queer romance as they task players with making difficult choices in both romantic and dangerous scenarios. The original game throws in time-travel powers for an extra wrinkle.

Elsewhere, we’ve got a zombie shoot-em-up Back 4 Blood (PS5/PS4), laidback space explorer Jett: The Far Shore (PS5/PS4), open-world explode-a-thon Just Cause 4: Reloaded (PS4), serene puzzler Omno (Ps4), and live-action interactive thriller Erica (PS4).

One game that’s definitely not part of the January line-up is Sayonara Wild Hearts. Simogo’s music-based action hit – with narration by Queen Latifah – was announced in Sony’s original post, but the company later clarified that this was an error.

On January 17, Premium subscribers will get three PS1 games: third-person action shooter Siphon Filter 3galaxy-far-far-away-based vehicle combat game Star Wars: Demolition, and sports sims Everybody’s Golf 2 (known as Hot Shots Golf 2 if you live in the US).

Multiple games are also leaving the service as new ones arrive.

Those games are: Bound by Flame, The Council, Electronic Super Joy, Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek, The Last Tinker: City of Colors, Leo’s Fortune, Masters of Anima, Seasons After Fall, Shiness: The Lightning Kingdomoath Space Hulk: Tactics.
