Vodafone Oman and Ericsson 5G SA test to improve mobile calls

Telecommunications operators Vodafone Oman and Ericsson have conducted a test call introducing 5G standalone voice and data services for Vodafone subscribers in the sultanate.

The voice over new radio (voNR) proof of concept (POC) call over a standalone 5G network is part of both operators’ ongoing project to develop a standalone (SA) network.

Deploying Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G core and IP multimedia subsystem technology, the POC proved how the mobile network can improve speech quality.

It also demonstrated the capability of Vodafone’s network to enable 5G-specific voice and communication services for both consumers and enterprises, using an experimental terminal, which will subsequently be replaced by commercial terminals made by Vodafone’s partners.

Unlike non-standalone 5G networks, standalone 5G networks do not build on existing 4G networks and technology, instead pairing 5G radios with a cloud-native 5G core network – allowing for flexibility and speed to meet current and future customer demand, according to Ericsson.

“These developments are important steppingstones on the road to the future, providing the capability to support data requirements that can enable all manner of cutting-edge technologies, from real-time virtual reality and augmented reality through to driverless cars and the latest advances in health care, improving quality of life en route,” said Vodafone Oman technology director Stelios Savvides.

“Through Vision 2040, Oman is embarking on a new phase of growth. Cellular technology is set to play a huge role in this journey and through our advanced communication technologies we aspire to help Oman realize the advanced digital economy mandated by Vision 2040,” said Ericsson Oman country manager Abdullah Al Balushi.

ENABLE HYBRID CLOUD & REDUCE NETWORK LATENCY WHITEPAPER

Hybrid cloud promises to bring together the best of both worlds enabling businesses to combine the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the cloud with the performance and control that you can get from your on-premise infrastructure.

Reducing WAN latency is one of the biggest issues with hybrid cloud performance. Taking advantage of compression and data deduplication can reduce your network latency.

Research firm, Markets and Markets, predicted that the hybrid cloud market size is expected to grow from US$38.27 billion in 2017 to US$97.64 billion by 2023.

Colocation facilities provide many of the benefits of having your servers in the cloud while still maintaining physical control of your systems.

Cloud adjacency provided by colocation facilities can enable you to leverage their low latency high bandwidth connections to the cloud as well as providing a solid connection back to your on-premises corporate network.

Download this white paper to find out what you need to know about enabling the hybrid cloud in your organization.
